Interpretive Summary: Jojoba meal is produced from jojoba seeds after the oil has been removed. The meal is a by-product of oil production and contains many different natural compounds. Two unique sugars were discovered in the meal. It is important to identify all of the components in jojoba meal so that new products may be developed. Finding new products in agricultural by-products improves the economic return of the crop and provides benefits to the grower and the consumer.

Technical Abstract: The present paper describes the isolation and identification of two galactosyl cyclitols from jojoba meal. The alpha-D- galactopyranosyl cyclitols were identified mainly by NMR spectroscopy and chemical derivatisation as O-alpha-D- galactopyranosyl-(1',5)-3-O-methyl-D-chiro- inositol and O-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl-(1', 2)-3-O-methyl-D-chiro- inositol.
