Interpretive Summary: Disease resistance, yield, and grade are issues of concern to the peanut industry throughout the world. Our research at the USDA-ARS in Stillwater, OK, has being addressing these issues to develop peanut cultivars possessing resistance to Sclerotinia blight, an economically important disease on peanut, and improve the grade of peanut pods. We report here on the development and release of a new peanut cultivar named "Red River Runner". In addition to have a significant better grade than the existing cultivar, this Red River Runner peanut, has acceptable level of resistance to Sclerotinia blight as well as improved oil quality (high oleic acid content) which prolongs the shelf life and preserve the freshness quality of peanut products. In 83% of trials in Oklahoma, and in 58% of trials in Texas, Red River Runner has statistically out graded "Tamrun OL07," a cultivar presently grown in Oklahoma and Texas.
'Red River Runner' (tested as TX 994313) is a high oleic runner peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cultivar cooperatively developed and released by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Texas AgriLife Research and Extension, and Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station. Red River Runner grades 3-4 points higher than other high oleic peanut cultivars that are currently grown in Oklahoma.
