Interpretive Summary: Gray mold can be a problem, particularly on swiss chard and occasionally on plants for seed production. It usually is a minor problem, in growing beets, although it can cause damage to beets in storage (discussed in separate chapter). Symptoms, epidemiology, and management are discussed in the chapter.

Technical Abstract: Gray mold, caused by Botrytis cinerea can cause an intermittent decay of leaves or seed production organs of beet. The disease is not usually economically important on sugar beet, but can be severe enough to need control on swiss chard. This chapter describes the disease and pathogen and mentions management options.
