Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: This chapter describes the ascomycetous fungal genus Protomyces and is to be published in "The Yeasts, A Taxonomic Study, 5th edition." Species of the genus Protomyces are plant pathogens that attack asters, wild celery, coriander and certain other plants. Symptoms include disruption of stems, leaf veins and other tissue. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis of gene sequences, Protomyces is one of the most primitive of ascomycete fungi, a distinction that it shares with Taphrina, pathogen of peaches and other fruit crops. Protomyces has shown some potential as a mycoherbicide for weed control. |
