Technical Abstract: Outfield variety trials, the final testing stage in the Louisiana Variety Development Program, are evaluated cooperatively by the USDA Agricultural Research Service, Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, and American Sugar Cane League. Advanced experimental varieties as well as current commercial varieties were evaluated at nine grower farms located throughout the sugarcane belt of Louisiana. Variety performance was compared to HoCP 96-540, which occupied 31% of Louisiana’s sugarcane acreage in 2007. Commercial varieties LCP 85-384, L 97-128, L 99-226, L 99-233, and HoCP 00-950 were included with HoCP 96-540 in plant-cane, first-stubble, second-stubble, and third-stubble tests. L 01-283 (released for commercial planting in 2007), L 01-299 (an experimental variety eligible for release in 2008) and Ho 95-988 were included in all crops except third-stubble. CP 89-2143, a commercial variety grown mainly in Florida, was included in the plant-cane and first-stubble tests and HoCP 91-555 was evaluated in second-stubble and third-stubble tests. L 03-371, an experimental variety eligible for release in 2010, was harvested in plant-cane tests. No variety was significantly higher than HoCP 96-540 in sugar per acre or cane per acre in plant-cane, first-stubble, or third-stubble tests. In the second-stubble test, all varieties had significantly more sugar per acre than HoCP 96-540 except for LCP 85-384 and L 97-128, while L 99-233 and L 01-299 were significantly higher in cane per acre. L 99-226 and HoCP 00-950 were significantly higher than HoCP 96-540 in sugar per ton in the plant-cane through second-stubble tests. HoCP 00-950 was the only variety significantly higher in sugar per ton in the third-stubble test.
