Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The production of corn-based ethanol in the U.S. is dramatically increasing; as is the quantity of coproducts generated. The sale of Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) as livestock feed provides ethanol processors with a substantial revenue source and significantly increases the profitability of the production process. Additionally, use of DDGS can partially offset the use of corn in animal feeds. It is imperative to augment current uses and to find new outlets for these materials, in order to bolster both the fuel ethanol as well as the livestock industries. The goal of this article is to briefly discuss six key issues that impact the value and utilization of DDGS: optimizing use for livestock; new species; consistency/variability; flowability; human foods; and industrial products. Ultimately, alleviating these constraints and pursuing these new possibilities will improve manufacturing economics and can augment the both of the respective industries.
