Interpretive Summary: From 2004 through 2005, experimental cotton varieties that had been genetically engineered to express proteins lethal to various caterpillar pests were evaluated in the laboratory and in the field. Results showed that some proteins with insecticidal properties were more lethal to certain caterpillars than others.

Technical Abstract: 2004 through 2005, plots of experimental transgenic cotton lines containing the exotoxin, VIP3A; endotoxin, Cry1Ab; and both VIP3A and Cry1Ab were evaluated for efficacy against certain lepidopteran pests. Results showed that VIP3A was more efficacious against the beet and fall armyworm compared to Cry1Ab; however, Cry1Ab was more efficacious against the tobacco budworm compared to VIP3A. Both VIP3A and Cry1Ab provided similar mortality of neonates against the bollworm. No synergism between VIP3A and Cry1Ab was observed.
