Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: During the last two years, the FPE-80 (Food Engineering Education Priorities Group) committee has undertaken an initiative to gather information regarding the current state of food engineering education in the U.S. In order to understand the needs of students, academic units, and industrial employers, surveys that have been tailored to each group have been developed. Two of these, namely, the student and faculty surveys, have already been distributed and analyzed. These survey results provide key information, such as number of faculty and undergraduate students, degrees offered, food engineering coursework offered, placement upon graduation, curricular needs, departmental needs, and perceptions regarding standardization of food engineering education. Detailed results of these surveys will be presented, and emerging trends will be discussed. The information gleaned from the surveys to date will be used to help guide FPE-80 in subsequent efforts to establish priorities for food engineering education.
