Interpretive Summary: The caterpillar-like larvae of sawflies are part of the plant-feeding complex of insects that cause millions of dollars of damage annually to agricultural crops, forests, and ornamental plantings. Investigation of a species found in Argentina causing damage in Nothofagus forests revealed that it is a species new to science and in the same genus as North American species which feed on oaks and hickories. This species is described and compared and separated from related species. The information will be of use to scientists studying plant-feeding insects and will make APHIS aware of this group of forest insects in central and southern Argentina and Chile.

Technical Abstract: Periclista dapotoae Smith, n. sp., is described from Argentina and Chile and separated from the described species of Periclista from South America. It was reared from Nothofagus antarctica (Forst. F.) Oest (Fagaceae). Periclista leucoma (Spinola) is a new combination.
