1. Demonstrate sex attraction responses of BMSB and determine physiological and environmental regulators of that behavior;
2. Determine host plant preferences and demonstrate BMSB orientation to host plant material;
3. Determine host plant effects on male pheromonal signaling, and host plant effects on attractiveness of male pheromone to females as well as other males;
4. Isolate and identify plant kairomones that mediate BMSB behavior;
5. Determine pheromones released in response to plants, and pheromones that are interactive with plant kairomones, to develop superior attractants.
A series of laboratory and field studies will test hypotheses regarding stink bug use of semiochemicals to mediate attraction and aggregation. Results of these studies will guide subsequent development of laboratory biosssays to be coupled with GC-EAD and GC-MS analyses for isolation and identification of pheromones and kairomones involved in aggregating behavior. Identified chemicals will be tested in laboratory and field assays for confirmation of activity.
