Research Project: Proteomic Investigation of a Soilborne Fungal Pathogen, Rhizoctonia Solani

Location: Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit

Project Number: 1230-22000-049-03
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jul 19, 2013
End Date: Dec 31, 2015

Objective:
The objective of this agreement is to investigate the pathogenesis of Rhizoctonia solani, a soilborne fungal pathogen using proteomics approaches through hosting and training a visiting scientist from India with a Borlaug fellowship.

Approach:
ARS will assist and train a visiting scientist on methods of extraction of total and secreted proteins from a soilborne pathogen, resolution of proteins in 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis, protein spot picking and processing spots for identification using MALDI-TOF/TOF or a similar mass-spectroscopic method, and bioinformatics data analysis and interpretation of results. In addition, the Cooperator will add plant pathological expertise to this investigation.
