Innovative Approaches to Capture Nitrogen and Air Pollutant Emissions from Poultry Operation: ........
Cotton Production and Processing Research
2013 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The purpose of the project is to demonstrate to broiler producers nationwide that properly designed Vegetative Environmental Buffers (VEBs) combined with acid scrubbers on exhaust fans will result in dramatic reductions in ammonia, particulate matter (PM), and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Scientists at Fayetteville, AR, will build five ammonia scrubbers developed and patented by the Co-PI. Two scrubbers will be installed at broiler farms in Deleware, two on a farm in Arkansas, and one in Pennsylvania. Ventilation rates and concentrations of ammonia and total suspended particulates will be measured periodically inside the facilities and in exhaust air with and without scrubbers. Nitrogen accumulation in the scrubbers will be quantified, along with the time required for maintenance and operational costs. We will analyze the PM filters and send data to Co-PI.
Equipment such as generators, cables, and samplers were prepared and transferred to cooperator. Clean filters were purchased, conditioned, and initial weights recorded and sent to sampling location for use in testing. Particulate sampling should occur next year.
