Research Project: Improvement and Implementation of Organic Pecan Systems in the Southeastern Us.

Location: Fruit and Nut Research

Project Number: 6606-22000-022-30
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jan 22, 2014
End Date: Aug 31, 2015

Objective:
1. Systems approach for organic pecan cultivation. 2. Determine the optimum methods for organic control of key insect pests and diseases. 3. Outreach, extension, and evaluation.

Approach:
Organic methods for control of key target pests will be implemented. Combined best management practices will be tested on grower orchards, whereas ARS and university land will be used to refine multiple treatments. Pecan weevil experiments will entail optimization of microbial control methods. Methods for control of pecan scab to be tested include mineral and biological derivatives. Aphid control experiments will assess the impact of arthropod predator releases and organic oils.
