To identify the Bt corn technology and its associated refuge system that provides the most economic benefit to producers.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Data will be collected from multiple field tests located in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. All production costs and operations will be recorded for each site. Impact of corn techonologies on insects and yelds will be collected. An economic analysis will be conducted to compare net return above treatment costs of each Bt corn technology and its associated refuge system.
Corn hybrids expressing multiple Bt proteins active against caterpillar pests reduced numbers of larvae and damaged kernels found in corn ears when compared to conventional hybrids, as well as single-Bt gene hybrids in some instances. However, reduced insect densities and subsequent damage did not necessarily relate to improved grain yields. These data, along with input costs, are currently being analyzed to determine the net return above treatment costs of each Bt corn technology and its associated refuge system. ADODR used site visit, email and telephone conferences to monitor activities of the project.
