Research Project: VITAMIN AND MINERAL SUPPLEMENTATION IN CHILDREN
2010 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
In a collaborative effort to evaluate the effects of a micronutrient supplement in children, we will provide consultation in the protocol development for the collection of blood from 300 children at baseline and 6 months post feeding and perform the assays of nutritional status biomarkers.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
We will analyze blood for zinc, B12, folate, retinol and serum transferrin receptors. If more serum is available, the following biomarkers will be performed in the following order: vitamin D, riboflavin and CRP. Documents Trust with Mathile Institute. Log 37849. Formerly 5306-51520-006-14T (12/09).

3.Progress Report

The intervention with a lipid based nutrient supplement was carried out in 300 children in rural Honduras. Consultation was provided by the WHNRC on sample collection and handling. The samples were collected from approximately 300 children who were randomized to either treatment or a standard complimentary feed. Samples from baseline, 6 mo and 12 mo time points have been received. Vitamin B12, folate, soluble transferrin receptor, C-reactive protein, and zinc concentrations were measured on all samples. Retinol determination in serum of the samples is in progress. The project will meet its targeted termination date.
