Develop public soybean germplasm containing less than 3% linolenic acid in the oil fraction in three unique platforms for a range of maturity groups.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
1. Make nine crosses and develop initial populations segregating for GmFAD3A and GmFAD3C alleles. 2. Use molecular markers to select desired genotypes. 3. Backcross selected genotypes and develop segregating populations. 4. Use molecular markers to select desired genotypes in 75% recurrent parent genome. 5. Advance material identified with desired genotypes. 6. Evaluate fatty acid profile of selected lines.
Research continued to develop low linolenic acid soybean germplasm in three different maturity groups. Soybean lines were selected that contained the desired combinations of alleles to produce a low linolenic acid oil. All three maturity groups now have the desired genes introgressed and are undergoing a backcross step to improve agronomics of the lines. Our second low linolenic gene combination was delayed by an inability to obtain segregating individuals. We had additional crosses made in the winter nursery and have started backcrossing the heterozygous individuals into a maturity III line to try to compensate for the lost time earlier.
Monitoring activities included email exchange of information and results in quarterly reports, and participation in the United Soybean Board Soybean Seed Composition Workshop in February in St. Louis, Missouri.
