February 2012

Dr. Tom Mascari, a scientist from Louisiana State University, visited Dr. Ryan Jackson of the Southern Insect Management Research Unit on February 13-14 to collaborate on a project entitled "Field  Evaluation of Novel Methods for the Control of Phlebotomine Sand Flies in Egypt and Kenya" that has been supported by the Armed Forces Pest Management Board.  This research is aimed at better understanding sand fly ecology using isotope ratio mass spectrometry in an effort to improve control techniques that will reduce the incidence of leishmaniasis in US military troops in Africa and the Middle East.

September 2011

Dr. Steve Clough and Bao Li from the USDA-ARS Soybean/maize Germplasm, Pathology, and Genetics Research Unit in Urbana, IL visited with Clint Allen on September 22 and 23.  Accompanying Steve were Michelle Santos and Milene Moller who are conducting research in Steve's lab, but are attending the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.  Part of Michelle's project is to examine gene expression between a stink bug susceptible and a semi-resistant line of soybeans.  She used plants grown by the SIMRU for part of her study.

August 2011

Since August 2, 2011, Dr. Yueping He from Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences in China has started a 3-month visiting to Southern Insect Management Research Unit at Stoneville, Mississippi. Dr. He has expertise in insecticide resistance and interaction of insecticide treatment and insect feeding physiology/behavior. During his 3-month visiting to Stoneville, Dr. He will participate in laboratory and field experiments in Dr. Yu Cheng Zhu's laboratory. Dr. He's visiting to USDA-ARS Stoneville is a part of international non-funded collaboration between USDA-ARS and Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. His trip is partially supported by a grant of $28,346 (?180,000 Chinese Yuan) awarded by Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences to a research proposal co-PIed by Dr. Yueping He and Dr. Yu Cheng Zhu (Jan. 2011 - Dec. 2012).

July 14, 2011 Dr. John Herbert SY candidate from The University of Georgia, Department of Entomology gave a presentation on "From Host to Landscape: Using Ecology to Improve Pest Management".

July 15, 2011 Dr. Emily Mueller SY candidate from The University of Wisconsin, Department of Entomology gave a presentation on " Research for the Improvement of Insect Pest Control in Southern Row Crops: My Expertise and Vision".

Jeannette Martinez, Ecologist with the Biopesticides and Pollution Division of the EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs, visited with scientists in the Southern Insect Management Research Unit on July 22, 2011.    Jeannette woks on insect resistance management programs associated with transgenic crops expressing Bt toxins.   She is also beginning studies toward a PhD in Entomology at Mississippi State University.   

June 2011

Dr. Pat O'Leary - Senior Director in the Agricultural Research Division with Cotton Incorporated visited the Southern Insect Management Research Unit to inquire about current research efforts.

Dr. Maribel Portilla, candidate for Research Entomologist, presented  a seminar on June 24 entitled " Novel Technique Using Artificial Diet to Estimate the Pathogenicity of Beauveria bassiana in Lygus spp. and Non-Target Insects".

Dr. Roberto Pereira, a candidate for Research Entomologist, from the University of Florida, Urban Entomology Laboratory and the Entomology and Nematology Department presented a seminar on March 4, 2011 titled "Entomopathogens: From M.a. to B.b., and a Bunch of Things in Between".

February 2011

Dr. Maynard Milks, Department of Biological Sciences, Louisiana State University, presented a seminar on "Potential of Entomopathogens to Control Loopers, Ants and Stink Bugs" on February 14, 2011.

Dr. Joe Hull, a Research Molecular Biologist with the USDA-ARS Arid Land Agricultural Research Center in Maricopa, Arizona visited Dr. Perera'a laboratory and presented a seminar "Identifying the molecular mechanisms underlying PBAN signal transduction in the silk moth, Bombyz mori" on February 17, 2011.

Dr. Pasco Avery of the University of Florida, Indian River Research and Education Center, Fort Pierce, Florida and a candidate for Research Entomologist presented a seminar on "The Versatility of Entomopathogenic Fungi: A Brief Overview of Research Studies" on February 25, 2011.

Dr. Sandra Woolfolk with the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center and the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology, and Plant Pathology, Verona, Mississippi presented a seminar on February 28, 2011. Dr. Woolfolk was a candidate for a Research Entomologist position.

January 2011

David Hughes of Bayer Crop Sciences visited with Ryan Jackson about Bt cotton and lepidopterans.

December 2010

Randy Luttrell met with Walker Jones of NBCL, Anthony Hawes and Jeff Birdstrup of AgBiotech Australia to review potential research with Spodoptera frugiperda NPV.

Don Parker of the National Cotton Council visited Randy Luttrell to review insect resistance to Bt cotton.

Bob Nicholas of Cotton Incorporated visited Randy Luttrell to discuss insect resistance to Bt toxins.

15 Hispanic students from the Leland School District visited Maribel Portilla for a tour at NBCL Building B.

September 2010

Mark Shankele, a research scientist, with the Mississippi State University, Pontotoc Experiment Station visited Randy Luttrell to discuss sweetpotato research on September 10.

Dr. Lihua Lu (Guangdong Academy of Ag Sci) and Dr. Yurong He (South China Ag univ) visited Yu Cheng Zhu on  9/22/2010.

August 2010

Craig Abel, Research Leader of the USDA ARS Corn Research and Crop Genetics Research Unit in Ames, Iowa and former Research Leader of SIMRU, visited Randy Luttrell and the entire SIMRU staff on August 1.

Abbas Ali with the University of Mississippi and the National Center for Natural Products Research visited Randy Luttrell and SIMRU on August 9.

James Whitehead and Dunk Porterfield of Makhteshim Agan of North America, Inc.  visited Ryan Jackson, Gordon Snodgrass and Clint Allen to to discuss insecticide research with tarnished plant bug.

July 2010

Walt Mullins, Bayer Crop Sciences, visited Randy Luttrell, Ryan Jackson and Clint Allen to discuss insect resistance and Southern Crop Alliance on July 21.
