Pedro Cruz-Carballo



Pedro Ernesto Cruz-Carballo is a highly accomplished Horticulturist currently serving at USDA-ARS in Poplarville, MS. With a wealth of experience and expertise, Pedro has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence in greenhouse management and horticulture. Pedro's diverse experience includes roles as a Soil Conservationist and as a District Conservationist at USDA-NRCS, where he excelled in conservation planning for rangeland and cropland in North Dakota and Kansas. He also contributed significantly as a Greenhouse Grower at ColorPoint LLC, where he managed the production of high-quality ornamental plants, showcasing his proficiency in greenhouse operations, pest management, and fertigation practices. With a Master's degree in Agronomy from the University of Puerto Rico, Pedro maintains a stellar academic record, earning a GPA of 4.0 and membership in the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. In his current role at USDA-ARS, Pedro has spearheaded transformative initiatives. Notably, he created a cloud-based pictographic inventory of pesticides, updated greenhouse software, and developed cloud-based schedules for maintenance operations and irrigation. His innovative solutions optimize resources, enhance efficiency, and contribute to a collaborative research environment. Pedro's commitment extends to education, with roles as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Puerto Rico and an Intern at the Agricultural Experimental Station in Isabela, PR. An active member of professional organizations, including Phi Kappa Phi and the National Organization of Professional Hispanic NRCS Employees, Pedro has received recognition, including the Persistence Award under ARS's StARS Program.
