Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Biocatalysis uses whole cells or enzymes, in aqueous or nonaqueous system, in their free or immobilized forms, for the production of useful chemicals. Its scope includes traditional fermentation and gene manipulation aiming at improving yield and function of the biocatalysts. Trends in biocatalysis research in the U.S. such as production of structured lipids for neutraceuticals, dicarboxylic acids from renewable resources, separation of enantioselective isomers, antibiotics, and lactic acid production will be discussed. However, the emphasis will be placed on the production of new hydroxy unsaturated fatty acids.
