Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This presentation will report on current research associated with a new mechancial delinter being developed at the Cotton Production and Processing Research Unit in conjunction with Cotton Inc. A bench-top version of the new mechanical delinter was built and evaluated to determine operational speeds and materials that yielded the best performance, cleaned seed without significant negative impact on germination. Evaluations were based on: residual lint, visible mechanical damage (VMD), and germination. Results show that of the five drum materials evaluated the two 3M products performed best for overall average Lint Loss while the brush material had the lowest overall average VMD. Germination varied depending on run time (i.e. 5 or 10 min) and number of brushes used to abraid the lint from the seed (i.e. 1 or 2). The least effective material at removing lint was the control (no abrasive - hard metal surface). The highest average germination (96%) was seen in the purple Scotch-Brite. Information obtained from the construction and operation of the bench-top model are being used to fabricate the next large-scale prototype.
