Interpretive Summary: The nutritional physiology, deficiency and toxicity of nickel are poorly understood by agricultural practitioners, extension specialists, and researchers. Existing information on these topics has been reviewed, organized, and presented as a definitive chapter on Nickel to be published in the Handbook of Plant Nutrition (CRC Press, Taylor and Francis). This Nickel chapter serves as a practical reference work for anyone needing information about nickel in related to crops. It will be exceedingly useful to plant scientists, environmental scientists, soil scientists, agricultural advisors, extension specialists, and farmers.

Technical Abstract: The agricultural significance of nickel (Ni) is becoming increasingly apparent; yet, relative few farmers, growers, specialists or researchers know much about its function in crops, nor symptoms of deficiency or toxicity. The body of knowledge is reviewed regarding Ni’s background, uptake, translocation, physiological relevance, genetics, required levels, interactions with other elements, visual symptoms, toxicity, forms in soils, soil testing, and fertilizers. This information establishes the current state of knowledge regarding Ni in agriculture and presents new insight into likely metabolic and physiological roles for this essential plant micronutrient.
