Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Use of antimicrobial agents in food animal production and its potential human health impact have captured the attention of scientists, animal producers, physicians, veterinarians, and consumers on a global level. Use of antimicrobial agents as a method to enhance animal performance or for disease prevention in livestock is being ruled out as an option and alternatives to antimicrobics must be developed. This symposium will provide the current trends for tackling the antimicrobial resistance dilemma. The presentations will include a perspective on perceptions of those involved in use of antimicrobics in livestock and a historical analysis of how we got here and where we need to go. Vaccines and immunological approaches will be presented as a “conventional” method of control, while the talk on probiotics and competitive exclusion will provide a perspective on non-conventional approaches. The final talk will provide the latest information on management and nutrition for controlling zoonotics at the farm level.
