Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: 1) A high quality draft sequence assembly and genetic map are available for Fusarium graminearum. Manual and automated annotation efforts for gene discovery currently are underway and the results of these efforts will be accessible on the web. 2) Functional genomic analysis will be advanced by the imminent availability of a F. graminearum Affymetrix GeneChip microarray as well as the availability of similar arrays for both barley and wheat. 3) Genome-wide mutagenesis studies are being initiated and coordinated by the highly interactive Fusarium research community. 4) Discovery of new subpopulations of F. graminearum and new Fusarium species capable of causing FHB will create challenges for monitoring the migration and persistence of species and introgression of populations over time. 5) Because of its dynamic research community and the development of research infrastructure and databases, F. graminearum has become an outstanding organism for studying pathogenic plant-fungus interactions.
