Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: During this session nine papers were presented. The first presentation provided an overview on the Food and Drug Administration regulation on Trans fat labeling that becomes effective from January 1, 2006. This was followed by a presentation entitled "Industry Response to Trans Fat Labeling". This presentation talked about data on consumer reaction to a survey on food products labeled with trans fat content. It also revealed that major fats and oils producers, food manufactures are actively engaged in developing new product with low trans fat content. The last seven presentations dealt with different methodologies available for trans fat and CLA analysis. This included techniques such as silver ion High Pressure Liquid Chromatography, Gas Liquid Chromatography, High Speed Gas Chromatography and Infrared Spectroscopy. Comparative studies on analysis of total trans content by IR and GC was also described. Applications of the above techniques to analyze trans fat from milk of cows fed with different diets were also presented.
