Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Phosphorus (P) management is becoming an increasingly important component of farm nutrient management. Attention has being focused on P as a result of the role P plays in water quality degradation, specifically accelerated eutrophication. Additionally, there has been a national revision of US Department of Agriculture-Natural Resource Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) 590 Nutrient Management Practice Standard that has increased awareness of different P nutrient management approaches and increased the use of these approaches in nutrient management planning. With this increased emphasis on P management, it is important to understand how states, including Pennsylvania, have decided to address P management and the basis for the most common approach selected, a P Index.
