Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Sorption-desorption interactions of pesticides with soil determine the availability of pesticides in soil for transport, plant uptake, and microbial degradation. Sorption-desorption processes are affected by the physical and chemical properties of the pesticide and soil, and for some pesticides, their residence time in the soil. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of soil moisture on sorption-desorption of a sulfonylaminocarbonyltriazolinone herbicide and its' phenylsulfamide metabolite in aged soil. The chemicals were incubated in clay loam and loamy sand soils for up to 12 weeks. Chemicals were extracted with 0.01 N CaCl2 then aqueous acetonitrile and sorption coefficients were calculated. Soil moisture had little or no effect on degradation and sorption of both compounds with time. The maximum change in sorption was an increase in Kd by a factor of 1.6 for the parent herbicide incubated in clay loam soil at 0.33 kPa for 12 weeks.
