Interpretive Summary: Currently used methods to determine the ingredients that make catnip popular with cats and pharmacologically interesting involve long and tedious procedures and use lots of material. A procedure has been developed that uses an alternate analytical procedure which measures it using small amounts of sample and in a short period of time.

Technical Abstract: An HPLC method was developed for the determination of 4a-a,7a,7aa- nepetalactone found in commercial and natural sources. This method bypasses the need to perform time consuming and material consuming steam distillations used in the determination of this compound by GC methods. Good linearity was found with this HPLC method for concentrations ranging from 4.1-4000 mg/mL, with a detection limit of 0.5mg/mL.
