Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Two hundred eighty-one clones from a diploid hybrid population of Solanum phureja x S. stenotomum were tested for late blight resistance under field conditions over two years. Based on field results, twelve clones and a check cultivar,Katahdin, were selected for evaluation by the detached leaf method. Two experiments were conducted. First, only five clones were evaluated with three different concentrations (10(^2), 10(^3), 10(^4) of sporangia of Phytophthora infestans, US-8 isolate, over three dates. Significant differences in resistance response were found among the five clones and among the three concentrations. The second experiment evaluated the twelve clones plus Katahdin at the optimal concentration (10(^4). Parameters examined included lesion size, percentage of leaf area covered by lesion and amount of sporangia produced/unit area of leaf. There were significant differences among the twelve clones plus Katahdin. The sporangia produced per leaf area correlated with the percentage of leaf area covered.
