Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A study was conducted on the extractability and solubility of simmondsin and the related compounds dimethyl simmondsin, didemethyl simmondsin, and simmondsin ferulate obtained from defatted jojoba meal. Previous investigations have examined a variety of techniques to make the meal suitable for use as a high protein animal feed supplement. Recent animal studies indicate that while simmondsin and simmondsin ferulate exhibit hunger satiation activity, the dimethyl and didemethyl compounds do not. Our objective was to develop a separation scheme to isolate the bioactive components from the defatted jojoba meal in a process that could be implemented on an industrial scale.
