Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) was first observed about 10 years ago as sporadic epizootics of reproductive failure and respiratory disease in some swine dense regions of the United States. It has become a pandemic disease and a major economic problem for swine producers worldwide. This report describes ongoing research conducted by the Virology Swine Research Unit at the NADC which is applicable to veterinarians in the field. The use of diagnostic techniques and the correct procedures for collecting diagnostic samples are discussed along with the current methods to distinguish PRRS virus isolates. Current studies evaluating the PRRS virus immune response and the efficacy of PRRS virus vaccines are reviewed.
