Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Current strategies for the control of Marek's disease (MD) are based largely on application of live vaccines at or before hatch. Seven licensed vaccine strains are currently used, either alone or in various combinations. The efficacy of vaccines is influenced by various factors including choice of strain and synergism with other vaccine strains. Despite the relatively high levels of protection achieved under field conditions, improvements remain a high priority for the poultry industry. Some obstacles to and opportunities for such improvements are discussed. However, limitations are apparent for any strategy solely dependent upon vaccination. An alternate paradigm is presented.
