Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: During the last several months a great deal of attention has been focused on an increased incidence of abortion in many swine herds in the United States. Evidence to date suggests that porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus is the cause -- even though the clinical picture differs somewhat from that seen in the past with PRRS virus infections. To make this clinical distinction, the more recent cases have been referred to most often as "atypical" PRRS. In this report we summarize some of what is known about atypical PRRS in regard to clinical features and laboratory diagnosis, and to on-farm management practices that may contribute to its appearance. We also point out that the causative role of PRRS virus has not been confirmed with certainty, and that investigations in regard to the characteristics and cause of so-called atypical PRRS are continuing.
