Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: While the chick embryo has been used as a model of early embryonic development for years, there is very little actually known about the relationship between egg management at the breeder farm and hatchery and subsequent early embryonic development and a successful hatch. Before moving to the main topics of this review, we would like to broaden the picture and set the stage for embryo morphogenesis by reviewing some of what we know about the events preceding embryo development. These include the fate of sperm in the oviduct, fertilization of the ovum, and actual egg formation. Also reviewed here will be anatomical terms frequently used to describe the structures and events associated with fertilization and embryo development. We will then describe early stages in embryonic development that occur prior to oviposition followed by an overview of later embryonic development with emphasis on development of the reproductive system and the eformation of the male and female systems.
