Technical Abstract: The USDA-ARS Subtropical Agricultural Research Laboratory (SARL) of Weslaco, Texas and Mycotech Corporation of Butte, Montana are conducting cooperative research to develop entomopathogenic deuteromycetes for biological control of whiteflies of the Bemisia tabaci complex. During late fall 1995 efficacies of three experimental emulsifiable oil formulations containing 2.1 x 10**13 conidia of Beauveria bassiana strain GHA per liter, a wettable powder formulation (Mycotrol WP R) containing 4.4 x 10**13 conidia per kg and an unformulated technical powder containing 1.3 x 10**14 conidia per kg were compared in field tests. A total of four applications were made weekly to small plots of cucumbers on the SARL research farm at rates of 2-4 x 10**13 conidia in a spray volume of approximately 740 liters per treated hectare using a high pressure (28.1 kg per cm**2) hydraulic sprayer. These rates translated into an average dose of 3.7 x 10**13 conidia per hectare of planted ground. The wettable powder and technical powder formulations were suspended by mixing in water with 0.02% Silwet L-77 R. Each treatment was matched with a spray carrier control. For the oil treatments, the concentration of oil in the sprayed emulsion ranged between 0.3 and 0.6%.
