Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In the Midwest, development of sustainable agricultural practices with benign environmental impacts from pesticides on water quality are based on an integrated understanding of water movement patterns and herbicide-based weed control strategies. In the deep loess hills along the Missouri River valley of western Iowa, a 40-ha. field is under study to determine the impact of continuous corn production under ridge-tillage on both surface water and groundwater quality. The landscape is characterized by gently sloping ridges, steep side slopes, and well-defined alluvial valleys often with incised channels that usually terminate at an active gully head. Results from chemical analysis of both water and soil samples for nitrate and major corn herbicides are used to describe the "water quality profile", a conceptual model for determining temporal relationships defined by the agronomic practice. This presentation will focus on the movement of corn herbicides together with their degradates and on nitrogen fertilizer within this system.
