Interpretive Summary: The International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants includes provisions for the suppression of names in certain publications that are listed in its Appendix VI. Any publication can be formally proposed for suppression, and if such a proposal is approved it will be included on this list. Unfortunately, there are three publications that from formal decisions taken in the past should have been included in this Appendix, but due to an editorial oversight these were not listed. Species names in these three publications, which with this listing could have been ignored, are now of uncertain status. Because all three are very early publications, the included names could upset usage of currently accepted names that apply to the same species. Because this omission cannot now be editorially corrected, the three publications are being proposed anew for suppression.

Technical Abstract: The International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants in its current edition, the 2012 Melbourne Code, includes in Art. 34 provisions for the suppression of names in specified publications that are listed in its Appendix VI. Any publication can be proposed for suppression, and if such a proposal is approved by the relevant nomenclature committees and ratified by an International Botanical Congress (IBC) it will be included on this list. Unfortunately, there are three publications that from decisions taken at the IBC in Tokyo in 1993 should have been included in this Appendix, but due to an oversight by the Editorial Committee of the 1994 Tokyo Code these were not listed. Species names in these three publications, which with this listing would not then have been considered to be validly published, are now of uncertain status. Because all three are very early publications, species names included therein would potentially destabilize later names currently accepted that apply to the same taxa. With the ratification of the Tokyo Code at the subsequent IBC in St. Louis, this omission can no longer be editorially corrected, so to resolve the uncertainty of this situation the three publications are being proposed anew for suppression.
