Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Extreme pressure additives are widely used in lubricant formulations for engine oils, hydraulic fluids, gear oils, metalworking fluids, and many others. Extreme pressure additives contain selected elements such as sulfur, phosphorus, and halogens in their structures. These elements, under extreme tribological conditions (e.g., high pressure, high speed, high temperature), have been found to undergo tribochemical reactions with the friction surfaces in situ and generate new materials with improved friction and wear properties. Recent work on sulfur containing biobased extreme pressure additives have shown that the mere presence of such elements was insufficient to provide an additive with extreme pressure properties. The structure of the sulfur element in the additive were found to be critical, not only for generating extreme pressure property but also the extent of such property by the additives. In this presentation, links between sulfur structure and extreme pressure property of biobased sulfur containing materials is discussed.
