Interpretive Summary: ‘CPSG-3481’ sugarcane was developed through cooperative research conducted by the Shakarganj Sugar Research Institute, and the USDA-ARS Sugarcane Field Station, and released to growers for loam soils in Pakistan in September 2012 for production use. Field data from three crops (plant cane and first- and second-ratoon crops) at three locations suggest CPSG-3481 yielded well in commercial sugarcane fields on loamy soils in Pakistan. Therefore, CPSG-3481 was released because of its significantly greater cane yield, sucrose yield and economic index than HSF-240 (a commercial check cultivar in the region). Compared to HSF-240, CPSG-3481 had 19.4% higher cane yield, 19.7% higher commercial recoverable sucrose, 43.0% higher sucrose yield, and 19.4% greater economic index when averaged across the three crops. CPSG-3481 was released because of its high stalk sucrose content, cane and sucrose yields and greater economic index on loam soils and its acceptable levels of resistance to red rot, brown rust, pokkah boeng mosaic virus, and smut diseases in Pakistan.

Technical Abstract: ‘CPSG-3481’ (Reg. No. , PI 676023) sugarcane (a complex hybrid of Saccharum spp.) was a new cultivar developed through cooperative research conducted by the Shakarganj Sugar Research Institute in Pakistan and the USDA-ARS Sugarcane Field Station in USA, and released to growers for loam soils in Pakistan in September 2012. CPSG-3481 was developed from a bi-parental cross (CP 81-1238 × CP 85-1308) made at Canal Point (CP), Florida, USA in December 1992 and selection process was taken at the Shakarganj Sugar Research Institute, Punjab, Pakistan in 2001-2011. CPSG-3481 was commercially released by the variety evaluation committee of sugarcane scientists from the public and private sectors in the sugarcane production region (Punjab, Pakistan) in 2012 because of its high cane and sucrose yields and high commercial recoverable sucrose on loam soils, and its acceptable levels of resistance to red rot caused by Colletotrichum falcatum, brown rust caused by Puccinia melanocephala, pokkah boeng caused by Fussarium moniliforme, sugarcane mosaic virus (mosaic), and smut caused by Ustilago scitaminae in Pakistan. Based on results of nine harvests of three crops (plant cane, first ratoon, and second ratoon) in the final-stage replicated yield trials conducted at three locations on loam soils and compared with a reference cultivar HSF-240, CPSG-3481 had 19.4% higher (p < 0.030) cane yield, 19.7% higher (p < 0.001) CRS, 43.0% higher (p < 0.001) sucrose yield, and 19.4% greater (p < 0.001) economic index.
