Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Vegetable oils have been reacted with thiols (mercaptans) to form biobased thioether-functionalized vegetable oils (TFVO). TFVO were efficient in the extraction of a model heavy-metal ion (Ag+) from an aqueous solution. TFVO, prepared from corn oil, was capable of reducing Ag+ concentration from 600 ppm below the detection limit. TFVO, prepared from canola oil, was less efficient, extracting only around 50% of the Ag+ ions. A possible explanation for the difference in the performance is the fact that TFVO from corn oil contains more bi-dentate thioether groups. TFVO were also demonstrated to extract other metal ions from water. The data demonstrate that these biobased materials can be successfully used for remediation of heavy-metal contaminated waters.
