Technical Abstract: Current developments in the field of metagenomics in biological sciences have demonstrated the need and potential usefulness of taxonomical and functional analyses of meta-omics data generated by genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. This review will provide a general overview of some recent applications of metagenomics and bioinformatics in studies of the animal and human microbiome, bacterial typing, pathogen surveillance, gut microbiota population dynamics in response to antibiotic treatments, and the discovery of novel antibiotics. The technological limitations, challenges, and future prospects will also be discussed.
