Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Animal manures are traditional sources of nutrients in agriculture. Under proper management, manures provide nutrients to soil, reducing or eliminating the use of commercial fertilizers, as well as organic carbon that improves soil physical properties and soil health. However, excessive application of nutrients to soil due to intensification of confined animal production poses a high contamination risk of surface and ground water from nutrients losses by runoff or leaching. Based on the use and management of manure from intensive animal production experience in the USA, this paper summarizes the following: 1) environmental regulation framework; 2) nutrient management plans; and 3) alternative and advanced technologies for the treatment of manure and effluents form intensive animal production. |
