Interpretive Summary: The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a critical organ system mediating nutrient uptake and use by the animal. Understanding factors that influence GI development, growth, and function is critical to improving management and therapeutic approaches to maximize health and production efficiency of livestock. A symposium was held summarizing the factors affecting intestinal development and how some of these factors impact growth, health, and welfare of animals. This is an introduction to the symposium papers that were published as a follow-up to corresponding presentations at the Growth and Development Symposium titled “Intestinal Development and Growth” held during the Joint Annual Meeting of the American Society of Animal Science, American Dairy Science Association, Poultry Science Association, Asociación Mexicana de Producción Animal, and the Canadian Society of Animal Science in Denver, CO, July 11 to 15, 2010.

Technical Abstract: The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a critical organ system mediating nutrient uptake and use by the animal. Understanding factors that influence GI development, growth, and function is critical to improving management and therapeutic approaches to maximize health and production efficiency of livestock. A symposium was held during the Joint Annual Meeting of the American Society of Animal Science, American Dairy Science Association, Poultry Science Association, Asociación Mexicana de Producción Animal, and the Canadian Society of Animal Science summarizing the factors affecting intestinal development and how some of these factors impact growth, health, and welfare of animals. Importantly, this forum also facilitated discussion of means to improve these critically important processes to maximize animal production efficiency and health.
