Technical Abstract: Thyroid glands were collected from field broiler chickens with clinical signs and lesions of Runting-Stunting Syndrome (RSS), submitted for histopathology and processed for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing using chicken Astrovirus primers. One-day-old White Rock specific pathogen free (SPF) chicks were inoculated, by the intraperitoneal route, with 0.1 ml of a homogenate produced from the thyroids of the field broilers, which was PCR positive. Chicks were screened for Astrovirus at 3, 7, & 10 days post-inoculation (DPI), and weighed at 3, 14, & 21 DPI. Radioimmunoassays for T3 were run on plasma samples. Results were compared with those of sham-inoculated controls.
