Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Rice blast and sheath blight diseases are the two major rice diseases that threaten the stable rice production worldwide. The fungus causing rice blast disease is a hemibiotrophic pathogen where the fungus invades host cells biotrophically whereas the fungus causing sheath blight is a necrotrophic pathogen where the fungus invades host cell saprophytically. In order to identify useful genes for understanding the interaction mechanisms of host-pathogen relation, gene expression profiles of rice after infections by rice blast and sheath blight pathogens were analyzed using DNA microarrays comprises of 22,000 rice genes. The results showed that 170 genes predicted from several defense pathoways were induced by both fungi at different time points after infection. The difference of timing of defense gene induction was also found to correlate with their respective phenotypic responses. These findings suggest that disease reactions to both fungi were largely determined by differential defense gene activation at different time points after the pathogen infection.
