Interpretive Summary: A technique was developed to determine levels of the fumonisin mycotoxins in by-products from ethanol production from corn. The method is based on the coupling of liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. The procedure allows the sensitive detection of fumonisins from by-products commonly used as ingredients in livestock feeds. The described method is shown to be effective for analysis of toxin levels in various formulations of distillers dried grains. Distillers dried grains are the common by-product commodity marketed by producers of fuel ethanol from corn. This work addresses growing concerns among ethanol producers and livestock producers interested in assuring the safety of the consumption of the ethanol by-products utilized in livestock feeds.

Technical Abstract: Mycotoxins are important contaminants in byproducts from production of ethanol from corn. In the northern part of the United States fumonisins are major mycotoxins in corn. Here we present results of development of mass spectrometric methods for the determination of fumonisins in matrices associated with ethanol production from corn.
