Interpretive Summary: The New Mexico Cotton Breeding Program has recently developed 18 Acala 1517 germplasm lines. These new Acala cotton lines have demonstrated in field tests to have significant improvements in lint yield, boll size, and other fiber quality traits. The development of these lines is important as they will be released to other public and private breeders to be used to improve current commercial cotton varieties. The development of these new lines demonstrates the effectiveness of starting with single plant selections in F2 or F3 populations after single crosses.

Technical Abstract: This paper reports the development of 18 Acala 1517 cotton germplasm lines developed in the New Mexico Cotton Breeding Program. NM W1218 is an Acala cotton line with okra leaf and 7.8% higher lint yield than Acala 1517-99. NM 970123 is an Acala cotton line with high lint percentage (44.6%) and 6.4% higher yield than 1517-99. NM 990813 and NM 990815 have 17.6 and 10.1% higher yield than 1517-99, while NM990815 also has improved fiber quality. NM 990632, NM 990649, NM 990764, and NM 990827 have improved fiber strength and similar yield to 1517-99. NM 010170 has showed 18.3% higher yield and similar fiber quality to 1517-99. Except for NM 010113 (90.4% of the yield in 1517-99), NM 010094, NM 010122, NM 010341, NM 010454, NM 010460, NM 0101462, and NM 010504 have similar or higher lint yield (-2.9 to 8.8%) than 1517-99, with longer and stronger fibers. NM 010113, NM 010311, NM 010341, NM 010454, NM 010460, NM 010462, and NM 010504 also have much larger bolls than 1517-99. These new Acala 1517 lines provide a rich source for improving cotton yield, fiber quality and boll size.
