Interpretive Summary: The genus Edwardsiella includes two species of Gram-negative bacteria that cause major disease in fish: Edwardsiella tarda (infects fish and other animals) and Edwardsiella ictaluri (infects fish only). Edwardsiella ictaluri causes enteric septicemia of catfish and is responsible for tens of millions of dollars annually in losses to the channel catfish industry in the United States. This book chapter provides up-to-date information on characterization and diagnostic methods, disease courses and pathology, distribution, epidemiology and control and vaccination strategies for E. ictaluri.
