Interpretive Summary: The name of the bacterial species that causes potato scab was changed in 1997 from Streptomyces scabies to Streptomyces scabiei in order correct improper use of Latin. The original name has been used since 1914 and this created confusion among researchers in agriculture and science as well as complicating the ability to search for information about this microorganism in online databases. A Request for an Opinion from the Judicial Commission of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes, which has jurisdiction in this matter, has been drafted in accordance with the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes to propose a return to the original species name.
