Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The USDA Greenhouse Production Research Group has been utilizing the TBG greenhouse for small-scale propagation, horticultural studies, disease expression, and germplasm curation activities for the past 18 months. Hiring of additional personnel and utilization of the new section has allowed expanded research trials, including a multidisciplinary spray trial to evaluate the engineering aspects of spray application and the efficacy of a fungicide to control powdery mildew. Analytical residue analyses were performed in the laboratories at both Toledo and Wooster to evaluate fungicide deposition and distribution. A system utilizing pre-inoculated hanging baskets and the HFC fans was evaluated for uniform disease distribution within the crop. Other experiments involve evaluation of hydrogel amendment on root disease development, the role of individual plant nutrients on disease expression, and the use of non-destructive physical measurements to predict disease onset prior to symptom expression.
