Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Plants enzymes play an important role in protecting plants from various pests and environmental stress. Peroxidase is one of the first enzymes responding to plant pathogens with peroxidase activity increasing many times in plant tissues infected by these pathogens. In particular, this is especially evident in peroxidase isozymes attached to cellular walls. We have isolated chitin-specific peroxidase isozymes from seedlings of the cotton plant Gossypium hirsutum (Malvaceae) and wild Malvaceae indigenous to Uzbekistan [i.e., Malva sylvestris (resistant) and Althea armeniaca (susceptible)]. The biosynthesis and peroxidase activity of chitin-specific isozymes was investigated using electrophoresis and analysis of specific peroxidase activity. An increase in activity was noted in resistant plants after inoculation with the phytopathogen Verticillium dahliae. The activity in the resistant Malvaceae plants was twice that found in susceptible plants. Electrophoresis showed the prevalence of acid proteins with Pl 3.1 - 6.0 among the chitin-specific peroxidase isozymes. Chitin-specific isozymes of cotton plant will be used to serve as a marker of pathogen resistance for selection of new cotton cultivars.
